Hilton Free Weekend Night Certificates Posted from my Citi Hilton Reserve Credit Cards

Updated at 12:40pm PT on 2/13: My Hilton account now shows the 2 Free Weekend Night Certificates in my account.

Good morning everyone, I hope you had a great weekend.  I have a short post today on the Hilton Free Weekend Night Certificate.  I used to have 2 Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Credit Cards and spent $10,000 on each credit card before the conversion to the American Express Hilton Ascend Credit Card.  This morning, around 2am PT, I received 2 emails regarding my Free Weekend Night Certificates.  These Free Weekend Night Certificates came earlier than I was expecting and did not mention anything about spending a combined $15,000 on the Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Credit Card and American Express Hilton Ascend Credit Card.  Here is what the Free Weekend Night Certificates email looks like.  You have to make a reservation before the expiration date listed in the email.  I believe your reservation can be anytime after that though.

PSA: You Cannot Use AA Gift Certificates for American Airlines Basic Economy Tickets [Partially True]

Updated 3:30pm PT on 2/8: I just received an update from Brant, here is what he said:

After another lengthy phone call to AA, turns out that the agent I originally talked to yesterday was only half correct. You CAN use GC’s to buy a basic economy fare, which I was told you could not. However, you cannot use residual funds from a canceled ticket purchased with a GC to book another flight in a lower category. The original tickets were in economy and I was trying to use the funds for basic economy. The original agent assumed that this restriction applied to using GC’s to make a basic economy ticket from the start. In other words, bad information.

Sorry for the misinformation everyone  it looks like you can use AA gift cards to buy American Airlines basic economy tickets, but only if the AA funds do not come from a regular American Airlines economy ticket  I hope that makes sense.

Good morning everyone, I just received a Facebook message from my friend, Brant, that I wanted to share with everyone (he said it would be helpful for others to know).  Here is what Brant said:

So, I just got off the phone with American Airlines and after a 30 minute ordeal I discovered something interesting that you might want to write on your blog for those who have been collecting AA gift certificates. I have around $2,700 worth of certificates that I bought using airline credit on AMEX Plat, Chase Sapphire Reserve, etc. Anyway, you cannot purchase a “basic economy” tickets using gift certificates. No way, no how, period even if you have status with AA. Just an interesting but aggravating fact you might want to mention.

Andaz Papagayo Resort Part 3: The Food is Expensive, but Delicious

Good morning everyone.  Here is the final part of my Andaz Papagayo Resort review.  Part 1 had photos of the resort, part 2 had photos of my room, and today’s post will have photos of the food, menus, and a MONKEY?!  Yes, believe it or not, one of the local monkeys jumped on my table as I was eating lunch and ran off with my tortillas!  I didn’t think he was going to grab my tortillas, so I slowly reached into my pocket to take out my phone, and as I was pressing the photo button, he grabbed my tortillas and ran.

With that said, I really liked the food at the resort, but it is expensive.  In this post, I will show you my 2 breakfast meals and 2 lunch meals.  We had late breakfasts and late lunches so we wouldn’t be hungry for dinner.  I also included photos of my receipts that show how expensive each item was.  As of February 7, the exchange rate is $1 US Dollar = ~570 Costa Rican Dollars.

Andaz Papagayo Resort Part 2: The Room was Great

Good morning everyone, I hope you enjoyed Part 1 of my Andaz Papagayo Resort review where I shared photos of the beautiful resort.  After checking into the resort, we walked to our room which was only a 5 minute walk away.  If your room is farther away, you can take the complimentary golf cart shuttle to your room.  The exterior of the room had a large, thick wooden door with a key car reader above the handle.  Let’s check out the inside of the room…

Andaz Papagayo Resort Part 1: The Resort is Beautiful

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a great Super Bowl weekend.  The Andaz Papagayo Resort in Liberia, Costa Rica was the last stop on my Central / South America adventure.  After taking my incredible 14 seat Cessna flight from San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR), I was picked up by the Liberia Airport Shuttle company (contact Gabriela) and driven to the Andaz Papagayo Resort ($49 US for one way).  After a ~45 minute drive from the airport, we arrived at the beautiful resort.  In part 2, I will show you my room and in part 3, I will show you the food.  Stay tuned for those posts.

We stayed 2 nights in mid January and had a great time.  The resort was probably 25% full.   Our stay cost 30,000 Hyatt points total (15,000 / night).  If you have a Hyatt free night certificate from the Chase Hyatt Credit Card, you can use your free night here.
