Good morning everyone. We all know the classic Capital One line, “What’s in your wallet?” (spoiler alert: no Capital One Credit Cards are currently in my real wallet), but I thought it would be fun to do this type of post monthly or every other month, depending on which credit cards I am currently using. At last count, I currently have 40+ personal and business credit cards, but I don’t carry or use every credit card every month. I treat my credit cards like tools in a tool box, each credit card has a specific use and no credit card is perfect for every situation. I also have 3 “wallets” for my credit cards: the physical cards that I carry with me in my iPhone case, the credit and debit cards in my ApplePay Wallet, and the credit cards in my travel wallet (aka backpack) that I use when I travel. I will go through my 3 “wallets”, but the cards in my ApplePay Wallet and travel wallet (aka backpack) don’t change very often.
Credit Cards in my iPhone Case / Wallet
Last week, I was approved for the Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card that currently offers a sign up bonus of 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points after spending $8,000 in 3 months. I am meeting the minimum spend on this credit card by paying for a few home improvement projections, car insurance, and any other large purchase that will get me closer to my $8,000 minimum spending requirement. I don’t have immediate plans for these 100K Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, but I can always use more Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.
I have 3 Citi Custom Cash Credit Cards that I have converted from 3 Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards (they became too difficult to use and keep track of which purchases were earning 3x). These credit cards offer 5x Citi ThankYou Points on the first $500 spent in select categories each statement cycle, so I float between credit cards and bonus categories on these credit cards. Sometimes I use my 3 credit cards to focus on restaurants, grocery stores, travel, home improvement store, etc. This month, this credit card is my restaurant credit card.
Lastly, I am carrying my Citi Double Cash Credit Card that earns 2x / 2% cash back everywhere (2x Citi ThankYou Points) with no monthly cap. I am trying to build up my Citi ThankYou Points balance since I have less than 100K points. I like to redeem at least 100K Citi ThankYou Points every year since I have a Citi Rewards+ Credit Card that gives me a 10% rebate on the number of Citi ThankYou Points I redeem each calendar year, up to 10K points. I have a few other 2x / 2% cash back cards like the American Express Blue Business Plus Credit Card, but I have a ton of American Express Membership Rewards Points, so I am currently holding off from earning more points.
Credit Cards in my ApplePay Wallet
Here are the 10 credit and debit cards in my ApplePay Wallet and a brief explanation of why:
- Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card – I am working on my $8,000 minimum spend requirement (mentioned above).
- Discover It Credit Card – I use this credit card for
gas stations anddigital wallets since these are Discover’s Q3 5% cash back categories. - Chase Freedom Flex Credit Card – I use this credit card at gas stations and select live entertainment (amusement parks / sporting events / online tickets) since these are Chase’s Q3 5% cash back categories.
- US Bank Altitude Reserve Credit Card – this is my go-to travel credit card since it earns 3x points on all travel and those points can be redeemed for 1.5 cents each via US Bank real-time rewards. I also use this credit card at Costco for the 3x mobile wallet since Discover doesn’t work at Costco.
- Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Credit Card – I use this credit card for 8x gas stations and 5x utility bills (gas, water, and electricity). I have more than 100K Wyndham Rewards Points which I need to use to book some Vacasa Vacation Rentals.
- Citi Double Cash Credit Card – this is my go-to 2x / 2% cash back credit card (mentioned above).
- American Express Blue Business Plus Credit Card – this is my backup 2x / 2% cash back card if my Citi Double Cash doesn’t work.
- Chase Ink Plus Business Credit Card (no longer available) – I use this credit card to pay for office supplies, internet, cell phone, and cable purchases since they earn 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.
- Wells Fargo Debit Card – this is my main checking account and I only use this debit card if I need to deposit checks in branch (99% are done via the app) or get cash out of an ATM (eww, cash!)
- Bank of America Debit Card – backup debit card if my Wells Fargo debit card doesn’t work.
Credit Cards in my Travel Wallet (aka Backpack)
Here are the credit cards in my travel wallet (aka backpack) and a brief explanation of why:
- American Express Business Platinum Card #1 – I only use this credit card at American Express Centurion Lounges and Escape Lounges. I don’t think I have been to an American Express Centurion Lounge yet this year since it would cost $50 to bring my wife in for every visit (or $300 a year to get her an employee card). We usually go to a Priority Pass restaurant together instead.
- American Express Business Platinum Card #2 – American Express wanted me to Expand My Membership, so I got a second card (mostly to keep the first AMEX Biz Plat company in my backpack).
- Priority Pass Cards x 3 – these are not credit cards, but I use them at Priority Pass lounges and Priority Pass restaurants. First / best priority pass card comes from my JPMorgan Chase Ritz Carlton Credit Card that allows unlimited guests at lounges and restaurants. The second Priority Pass card is from the Capital One Venture X and the third Priority Pass card from the AMEX Biz Plat. I could probably get rid of card 2 and 3, but I like having back up cards, just in case.
- JPMorgan Chase Ritz Carlton Credit Card (no longer available unless you product change) – I only use this credit card to trigger the $300 annual travel incidental credit. Great for seat assignments, checked bag fees, inflight meal purchases, etc.
- Chase Ink Plus Business Credit Card (no longer available) – mentioned above.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card – If I ever make it to a Chase Sapphire Lounge, I will be ready. I never use this credit card and plan on product changing to another Chase Freedom Flex when my annual fee posts.
- US Bank Altitude Reserve Credit Card – mentioned above.
- Capital One Venture X Credit Card – I use this credit card for access to the Capital One Lounges (I’ve been to the DFW lounge a few times) and to trigger the $300 travel credit through the Capital One Travel portal.
- Caesars Rewards Diamond Card (expired)- I need to get an updated Caesars Rewards Diamond Card next time I am at a Caesars property, so I can get the $100 celebration dinner credit.
- AAA Classic Card – AAA roadside assistance and discounts at hotels when using the AAA rate.
- AARP Card – discounts at hotels using the AARP rate.
Those are all the cards in my 3 “wallets”. If you have any questions about any of my cards, please leave a comment below. Have a great day everyone!
You just got the Chase Ink Biz Preferred? Isn’t that subject to the 5/24 rule? If not, wow, I’ve been significantly misinformed by others. If so, how have you managed to stay under that umbrella given how many cards you have?
As far as I know, this CC still uses the 5/24 score. I have a spreadsheet that I use to track CC applications, and I’m currently 3/24. I’ve only applied for 3 personal CCs in the last 24 months, but I’ve applied for 17 business CCs in the last 24 months which don’t add to the 5/24 score.
