Buy Points to Top-Up your Drop Account to Redeem Points for Gift Card (Then Close Account)

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you had a great weekend.  One of my travel hacking / miles and points goals this year is to simplify my life and use less card-linked / reward apps that track all my purchases.  I have “used” Drop for several years.  And by “used” I mean I created an account, linked all my cards to it, and waited for the rewards to roll in.  Over the years, I seem to earn less and less points with Drop and now my points are barely trickling into my account.  Drop introduced Drop Premium which gives you 1,000 points per month just for being a member and claiming the points.  I’m convinced this is a tactic used by Drop to keep members active.  If you want to redeem your Drop points for a gift card, you need to have a minimum of 25,000 points.  I believe it used to be 10,000 points for a $10 gift card, but Drop got rid of that redemption option (to increase orphaned points in the accounts and reduce gift card expenses).

Long story short, I was about 7,000 points short of my 25,000 point goal to redeem my points for a $25 gift card.  Conveniently, Drop introduced a Top-Up feature where you can buy points.  I decided to buy 7,000 points for $9 in order to redeem my 25,000 points for a $25 gift card.  That seemed like a decent deal to me.  I will show you some of the roadblocks I went through and how I closed my Drop account at the end of this post.

I didn’t take screenshots before I bought the points, but this is what my account looked like after I used the Top-Up feature.  I have had that 20,000 point referral bonus sitting there for months, so I doubt those points will ever come (this might be another tactic Drop uses to keep members around).  In the Points History section, you can see I bought 7,000 points on May 7 and received 1,000 points each month I opened the app and claimed the points.  It looks like I forgot to open the app between January 10 and April 6 since I didn’t get any points during that period.

Did Caesars Rewards Says No $100 Dining Credit for You? Check with the Participating Restaurants

Good afternoon everyone.  Last week, I was in New Orleans for the 31st annual Freddie Awards.  During my visit, I went over to the Harrah’s New Orleans, Caesars casino property, to pick up my new Caesars Rewards Diamond card.  Over the last few weeks, there has been a lot of drama over Caesars Rewards Diamond matching from Wyndham Rewards Diamond.  I have the Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Credit Card which comes with Wyndham Rewards Diamond Elite Status and I was able to match to Caesars Rewards Diamond Elite Status pretty easily (without the upgrade, downgrade, and upgrade drama).

My favorite perk of Caesars Rewards Diamond Elite Status is the $100 dining credit you get each year.  After having diamond status for the past 3-4 years, I was finally able to use the $100 dining credit for the first time.  Unfortunately, when I went to the Caesars Rewards desk at Harrah’s New Orleans, the agent said I wasn’t eligible for the $100 dining credit since I did a status match.  Hmm, I thought I was eligible, so I decided to do some more research.  In this post, I will show you what I did to confirm my $100 dining credit and how I used my credit.

Travel with Grant has Moved… into a New Home & Quick Trip Report of our Maui Vacation

Good morning everyone, happy Friday! Laura and I just finished selling our old home, buying a new home, doing a few small home improvement projects around the new home (painting rooms, changing lights, etc.) and unpacking boxes. I haven’t had much free time to write blog posts over the last few weeks, but now that the dust has settled, I have more free time now.

A few weeks ago (in the middle of packing and moving), Laura and I went to Maui for her Spring Break (she is a teacher). We flew Alaska Airlines roundtrip from San Francisco (SFO) to Maui (OGG) using my Alaska Airlines Companion Fare. Since we both have Alaska Airlines MVP Elite Status, we were upgraded to first class on our return flight. In my experience, I have had good luck getting upgraded when flying on less popular routes and on less popular days (like weekdays).

We used AutoSlash to help get us a good deal on a Hertz rental car. The new Maui airport rental car facility is very nice – I wish all airports had a rental car facility and tram system like the one at the Maui airport. We stayed on the South Shore in Kihei in a Vacasa Vacation Rental. The rental cost 13,500 Wyndham Rewards Points per night and I used a combination of points from my Barclays Wyndham Rewards Business Earner Credit Card and transferred Capital One Points to Wyndham Rewards to top off for an award.  Here is the view from our Vacasa Vacation Rental:
