Kick Back with Bonus Alaska Airlines Miles (Promo Expires July 3)

Need to top off your Alaska Airlines mileage account in order to, as Alaska Airlines puts it, “Whisk yourself away on a dream vacay”? Ok, that may sound hokey, but the alliteration is good, and Alaska’s mileage plan has indeed provided me with the start to many wonderful journeys!

We all have our favorite airlines and miles programs. Maybe I’m biased because I usually start my travels from the West Coast, but I’m a big fan of Alaska Airlines and I can never have too many Alaska miles. If your Alaska miles account is short on miles, Alaska has a 40% offer on purchased miles expiring on July 3. This brings the cost to 2.1 cents per mile. Alaska miles have great value for me. Why? I like that Alaska isn’t a part of an airline alliance, but rather that they have a long list of airline partners that offer incredible business and first class products. My two favorite Alaska Airlines partners are Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines. I recently flew Cathay Pacific Business Class to Asia. My first time flying Cathay Pacific was back in 2012, and even after all these years and having flown many different airlines, I’m still a huge Cathay Pacific fan. I have a Japan Airlines flight booked using Alaska miles, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing JAL’s current product.

How to Combine Citi Thank You Points Accounts (Spoiler: Just Call Citi)

Good morning everyone.  Long story short, I have a Citi Premier Credit Card and 3 Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards (I’m trying to spend $10,000 on each credit card every year to get the bonus 10,000 Citi Thank You Points every year).  I only applied directly for one of these Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards (thanks for the $650 AT&T phone credit) and converted my old Citi Forward Credit Card and Citi Prestige Credit Card into additional Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards.

But somehow one of my Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards had a separate Citi Thank You Points account.  Why is this a problem?  Citi AT&T Access More Credit Cards do not have the same transfer partners as my Citi Premier Credit Card.  I will show you what I mean below.  In this post, I will show you why it is better to have all of your Thank You Point earning credit cards linked to the same Citi Thank You Points account and show you how easy it is to combine your accounts (spoiler: just call Citi).

To demonstrate why having 2 Citi Thank You Points accounts is not better than 1, I clicked the blue Select button at the top of the page that only had 1,480 Citi Thank You Points.

AMEX Cash Back & Membership Rewards Changes: SPG Transfers, Extended Warranties & More

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend.  Over the weekend, I reviewed my recent American Express credit card statements and spotted some major and minor changes to the terms.  A few months ago, I wrote about other changes: AMEX Membership Rewards Changes: No Points for Cash Equivalents (Gift Cards) & Person-to-Person Payments (Venmo).  Usually, whenever American Express makes a change to their program, it usually benefits American Express more than their cardholders.

In this month’s updates, there are some major and minor changes.  I reviewed the changes to my American Express Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card and there are some changes that affect cash back credit cards.  I also reviewed the changes to my American Express EveryDay Credit Card that earns Membership Rewards Points, and there are some changes there too.  Lastly, some changes affect all types of credit cards.  There is a lot to cover, so I will try to bold the most important stuff.

  • American Express will look at your credit report and may use the info for marketing purposes, to evaluate your account, and more.
  • American Express (and their affiliates and partners) may contact you at any phone number or email address to service your account or collect past due amounts.
  • American Express will specify when and how frequent you can use the Plan It feature.

Flights to Cuba & El Salvador: Thinking Outside the Box

I’m well versed in flight options from the US, but when it comes time to plan trips between different regions, I have to think about my options a little more.  My boyfriend and I decided to plan a trip to El Salvador for the end of May, but I was going to Cuba right before as part of the last class for my MBA.  He was able to snag great flights on Delta for only 14,500 miles roundtrip during one of their sales. Unfortunately, I was locked in to flying to Cuba with my class – which, thankfully was a cheap $90 flight that I wouldn’t have used miles for anyway.  I decided it would make way more sense to fly directly from Cuba to El Salvador than to come back to the US first. As usual, I checked cash prices first. I was looking at around $300 for the one-way flight… ouch.

That’s when I turned to using miles. Flyermiler, one of my favorite tools, showed that I could book with Avianca LifeMiles for only 10,000 miles! It also showed that United would cost only 10,000 miles, but that’s not actually correct. United charges 12,500 or 17,500 miles for an economy class flight, depending on routing.  Luckily for me, I had some LifeMiles, so I was able to get a killer deal on my flight to El Salvador!
