AMEX Cash Back & Membership Rewards Changes: SPG Transfers, Extended Warranties & More

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend.  Over the weekend, I reviewed my recent American Express credit card statements and spotted some major and minor changes to the terms.  A few months ago, I wrote about other changes: AMEX Membership Rewards Changes: No Points for Cash Equivalents (Gift Cards) & Person-to-Person Payments (Venmo).  Usually, whenever American Express makes a change to their program, it usually benefits American Express more than their cardholders.

In this month’s updates, there are some major and minor changes.  I reviewed the changes to my American Express Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card and there are some changes that affect cash back credit cards.  I also reviewed the changes to my American Express EveryDay Credit Card that earns Membership Rewards Points, and there are some changes there too.  Lastly, some changes affect all types of credit cards.  There is a lot to cover, so I will try to bold the most important stuff.

  • American Express will look at your credit report and may use the info for marketing purposes, to evaluate your account, and more.
  • American Express (and their affiliates and partners) may contact you at any phone number or email address to service your account or collect past due amounts.
  • American Express will specify when and how frequent you can use the Plan It feature.

Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos – Spoiler Alert – Don’t Waste Your Time

I received an email several weeks ago about 20,000 points per night redemptions at the Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos All Inclusive. I began thinking of the great weather, the sun, the beach, and booked 6 nights. Unfortunately, the rest of this trip report is the failures I experienced until I finally decided I had enough and left for the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos.  Prior to my arrival, I was in contact with a manager by email, and he let me know I was entitled to an upgrade due to my IHG Platinum Elite Status (I was not expecting this), and for $45 / night additional, I could again upgrade to an ocean view room with a terrace and hammock. I upgraded as the limited photos available showed what I thought was a nice room.

CHECK-IN

Upon arrival, the check-in process was the first problem; we were told to go do “something” for an hour while our room was cleaned. This was odd since we arrived around 1:30pm and the manager was aware of my arrival time. We went to the one restaurant on property that was open and had a good meal. After an hour had passed, we returned to the lobby to find complete chaos. There was a line from the desk half way through the lobby, and only some of the computers were staffed for check-in. It appeared there may have been internet or connection problems because nobody was moving it seemed. I was given a key to my room and thought I had dodged a bullet – I didn’t have to wait in that line. My hopes were short lived as I tried to get in my room and the key didn’t work, the dreaded red light. I returned to the lobby and the same faces were standing in line, not on the beach or enjoying their free alcohol. I asked an employee what was going on and was told to come back in 45 minutes. I asked to see a manager.  A manager arrived about 5 minutes later and had keys to our room, and we were finally starting to settle in.

Chase Honored 20,000 Point Offer on Upgraded Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card

Good afternoon everyone, I hope your day is going well.  2 days ago, I wrote My New Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card Arrived & Upgrade Offer Discrepancy.  In that post, I told you that I accepted a 20,000 point upgrade offer to upgrade from my old Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card to the new Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card.  But when I got the credit card and confirmed with the rep that my upgrade offer was 20,000 points, the rep told me that my account only showed a 10,000 point upgrade offer.

After that call, I sent Chase a Secure Message (SM) with the screenshots of the 20,000 point upgrade offer.  Shortly after that, I received a response.  My 20,000 point upgrade offer “will be honored” (I would hope so, since that is why I upgraded), after my first purchase.  To get the 20,000 point upgrade offer, I had to make 1 purchase.  After that purchase posted, I was told to reply to the Secure Message “to claim the offer.”

My New Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card Arrived & Upgrade Offer Discrepancy

Good morning everyone.  A few days ago, Doctor of Credit reported that you could upgrade your Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card to the new Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card.  There were upgrade offers between 0 Marriott Rewards Points and up to 50,000 Marriott Rewards Points.  I was offered 20,000 Marriott Rewards Points to upgrade and I accepted the upgrade offer.

I made sure to take screenshots before and after accepting the offer, just in case.  Turns out, that was a really smart move because when I called Chase this morning to verify the upgrade details, I was told that my account only had an offer for 10,000 Marriott Rewards Points.  I sent these screenshots into Chase via Secure Message (SM) and am waiting for a response.  While that happens, I will show you the welcome letter, card art, and compare the new card design to the previous card design.
