Gift Card Warning: Check Packaging for Signs of Tampering

Good afternoon everyone, a friend of mine from Irvine (Southern California) sent me the following email about gift card fraud and how the scammers were able to access the gift card information by tampering with the gift card packaging.  Here is his story:

A few days ago, I went to Woodbury Ralphs to get a few VGC’s. I should have been tipped off that something was wrong b/c there were barely any left …. there usually are tons.

But anyway, I grabbed a few and checked out. They all still had the pull tab intact. They all loaded with $500 just fine, without a problem.

Upon calling the 1-800 # to activate two of them, however, the prompts said that the cards could not be activated and to speak to a customer service rep. It turned out that both of the cards were frozen b/c someone had tried to access funds on them (back in October 2014). And thus they were frozen.

I looked carefully at the cards and they were pretty scratched up (one of them had a hair glued on!). A closer inspection of the packaging on the bottom showed that there was a very subtle yellow hue at the bottom of the packages where the scammer had sliced them open and glued them back together again. I have attached photos of this (I slightly adjusted the levels of the picture in Photoshop to enhance the yellow at the bottom, so it’s easier to see (it was barely noticeable in real life).

Travel Challenge: Could you MS During the Week to Pay for a Weekend Trip?

Updated at 9:30am PST on 1/31/2015: the winners of the contest have been chosen.  Scroll to the bottom of this post to see who won.

This is an idea that came to me a few weeks ago, but I never gave it much thought until writing my recent tell-all MS posts (Part 1: My Manufactured Spend and Redbird Loading Strategy and Part 2: My Manufactured Spend Strategy with PayPal, Chime, Meetups, Reselling, and More!).  If you assumed the miles, points, or cash back posted right away (rather than when the statement closed), could you MS during the week to pay for a weekend trip?

The Rules

To make things more realistic, let’s ignore credit card sign up bonuses and only focus on using the credit cards and prepaid cards you currently have today.  Timing is everything, so let’s assume today is the first of the month and all your monthly MS limits have been reset (Bluebird, Serve, Redbird, PayPal, etc.).  Your net out of pocket expenses should be $100 or less.

Part 1: My Manufactured Spend and Redbird Loading Strategy

Good morning everyone, I wanted to respond to Frequent Milers’s post (My manufactured spend strategy) and share my own MS strategy.  You will probably be surprised by my strategy, maybe inspired, and maybe even disappointed.  Let’s get started…

Every Sunday, Staples releases their latest Easy Rebate offers/coupons here.  This week, we have more paper on sale and a few smaller deals, like $5 off food and tape.

American Express Uses Level 3 Purchase Data on Staples Orders

(Hat Tip to Alex in the comments)

Good afternoon everyone, you can file this post into the category called “things I don’t think are good news.”  Let me explain… When merchants process your credit card, a certain amount of data is sent to your credit card company.  The amount of data is divided into 3 levels, with level 1 sending the least amount of data and level 3 sending the most data.  When you buy an airline ticket, the airline reports your purchase as level 3, since you can see the details of your itinerary on your credit card statement.  Since level 3 data is costly to the merchant processing your credit card payment, most merchants only send level 1 data.  Fast forward to a few days ago…

It looks like Staples.com (maybe Staples too) is sending level 3 data to American Express (possibly other credit card companies as well).  How do I know Staples.com is sending level 3 data to American Express?  Looking at my last 2 purchases at Staples.com, I can click on the details of the transaction and see “VISA 200 GIFT CARD” as the note.  That is exactly what I bought using that American Express credit card.  If you look at the second image, you can see “SOUTHWESTGIFTCARD 100 EMAIL DELIVER” as the note on a different American Express credit card.  I looked at a few other purchases made on other American Express credit cards and it looks like only level 1 data from CVS and Safeway.
