Convert Marriott & Ritz Carlton Points to United Airlines Miles (2.24:1 Ratio)

Good morning everyone.  A few days ago, I was in an interesting predicament.  I found an awesome United Airlines award, but I did not have enough United Airlines miles to book the award. *gasp* Worse though, I did not have enough Chase Ultimate Reward Points either. *double gasp* I’m not sure if you have been in this situation before, but it is not fun.  Here are some of the options I considered:

  • Converting SPG points to United Airlines miles at the 2:1 transfer ratio
  • Paying to transfer United Airlines miles from my grandparents’ account
  • Buying United Airlines miles directly from United Airlines
  • Begging United Airlines to “help a friend out”

Before I did anything drastic or embarrassing, I remembered that Marriott and United Airlines have a crossover relationship, whereby you can transfer miles into points or points into miles.  Here is the Travel Rewards page on Marriott’s website.  Marriott partners with many other airlines, but they have an exclusive relationship with United Airlines where you can get a “20% discount when you convert Marriott Rewards points to United MileagePlus award miles.”

I crunched the numbers and the transfer ratios range from 4:1 down to 2.24:1 (Marriott Points to United Airlines miles).  Since I needed around 25,000 United Airlines miles, I selected the 4th option (56,000 Marriott Points = 25,000 United Airlines miles).

Merging Marriott and Ritz Carlton Accounts; Combining Points and Free Night Certificates

Good morning everyone.  Last December, I applied for the JPMorgan Chase Ritz Carlton Credit Card which offered 140,000 Ritz Carlton Points (Ritz Carlton and Marriott points can be used interchangeably).  During the approval process, the system created a new Ritz Carlton account number for me.  After meeting the minimum spend requirement, I had an old Marriott account with 28,985 points and a new Ritz Carlton account with 150,000+ points.

An American Express Credit Card can Make/Save Over $300 from AMEX Offers in One Year

(Hat Tip to Noah @ Money Metagame for the idea)

Good morning from beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona.  I am staying at the $80/night Hyatt Place in Scottsdale after an exciting day at the Phoenician Hotel and Resort for the First2Board PHX Sessions.  This morning, I was reading Money Metagame’s article and it got me thinking… how much money have I made/saved using AMEX Offers on 1 AMEX card over the last 12 months?  If you log into your American Express account, click AMEX Offers For You, and click My Savings, you will see all the enrolled offers that you participated in.  I think this list may exclude AMEX Sync Offers, so take that into consideration if you don’t see all your offers.  Here is what I bought and the profit ($/%) per AMEX Offer:

  • Office Depot: $50 Amazon Gift Card = $10 savings (20% free)
  • Whole Foods: $75 loaded to my Clipper Card = $10 savings (13.3% free)
  • Home Depot: $75 Panera Bread Gift Card = $15 savings (20% free)
  • SamsClub.com: $20 Sams Club Gift Card = $20 savings (100% free)
  • Smart & Final: 3 x $50 Southwest Airlines Gift Card = $75 savings (50% free)

Watch Netflix at Marriott; New Plenti Online Shopping Portal and Partner/Household Offers

(Hat Tip to Paul for the email)

Good morning everyone, happy TGI Friday.  I have 2 short pieces of news to share.  A few days ago, Marriott announced their new partnership with Netflix via this press release:

Bethesda, Md., June 10, 2015 – Marriott Hotels, the flagship brand of Marriott International Inc., and Netflix announced a groundbreaking partnership to revolutionize the guest room entertainment experience. Guests staying at select Marriott Hotels will be able to subscribe to Netflix or sign into their existing accounts simply by using the Netflix app on the hotel’s internet-connected guest room televisions.

Don’t get too excited just yet, only 6 Marriott properties will be available at the beginning, but more will be added throughout the year:

With this agreement, Marriott Hotels is the first hotel brand authorized to offer guests direct access to their Netflix accounts as part of its guest room entertainment offering. Netflix is currently available at six properties, with six more launching this summer. The brand plans to expand Netflix to 100 of its properties by the end of 2015, and to nearly all of its more than 300 properties in the U.S. by the end of 2016.

This feature will be built into the TV and not dependent on the WiFi speed in your hotel room.  I don’t have a Netflix account or watch any of the “amazing” Netflix programs, but I am sure this is good news for some of you.
